Put your garage on show, too

With storage space at a premium in the smaller homes now increasingly favoured by many buyers, a lock-up garage could quite easily become a dealmaker – provided it isn’t overflowing with clutter.

“First-time buyers and empty-nesters in particular now want a space where they can not only park their car but safely store bikes and surfboards, trailers and camping equipment, lawnmowers, weed-eaters and garden tools,” says Harcourts Africa CEO Richard Gray.

“So before you put your townhouse or cluster home on the market, you should have a good clear-out and tidy-up to make sure that your garage is as neat and spacious-looking as possible.”

You should start, he says, by removing as much as possible from the floor in order to make maximum use of the available space. “Shelves and wall cupboards, perhaps salvaged from a kitchen makeover, will accommodate most of the garden hand tools, pesticides, insecticides and paint cans that usually clutter the floor space.

“And any good hardware shop should offer a variety of hooks that will keep bikes, boards, canoes, various garden tools, hosepipes, brooms and mops out of the way, while cheap galvanised guttering supports make ideal hangers for fishing rods and garden umbrellas.”

If you have the budget, Gray says, it is also a good idea to paint the interior walls of the garage white or another light colour, and also to make sure that the door is freshly painted or varnished. You should also ensure the opening mechanism, whether mechanical or electrical, works properly.

“When it comes to the floor, a coat of non-slip epoxy will create a spruce look, or you can apply a concrete stain, but before you even think of doing so, you will need to scrub off all oil, grease and grime with a heavy-duty proprietary cleaner.”

Of course, he notes, you don’t have to be a seller to get the benefit of a garage “makeover”. A plus for any homeowners of getting organised in this way is that whatever you want out of the garage will be visible and easily accessible. In addition, it will be easier to keep clean and that will discourage insects, rats and snakes from taking up residence.
